The winery was founded and built by Todd Anderson starting in 1983. Todd pounded the posts, built the reservoir, built the buildings and taught himself to make wine. The original intention was to grow grapes and sell them. Todd started making wine for fun in 1982 and when the vineyard came into production, Todd decided to make a little Cabernet and sell the rest of the grapes. The first vintage released was the 1988 Estate Reserve Cabernet and was one of the top Cabernets produced in the world and was featured on the cover of the Wine Spectator. The first vintage produced was the 1987, but was held for the winery's 10 year anniversary.

50% of the total production is the Estate Reserve Cabernet. The other wines produced are all under 1000 cases. A typical visit to the winery can include sitting in the cave with Todd tasting through current and past vintages, sampling barrels, tasting wines nobody ever hears of and possibly enjoying a cigar on the patio above the vineyards and lake.
