Description
In 1992, vintner and restaurateur Pat Kuleto founded Kuleto Estate in a remote mountain setting overlooking Lake Hennessey, Pritchard Hill and the towns of Rutherford and St. Helena. The 761-acre ranch features 90 acres of vineyards divided into 80 microblocks based upon soil, exposure, elevation and topography. The wines from Kuleto Estate are always deep, intense and luscious.
Vintage Notes
The 2009 growing season was as gentle as could be. Acids accumulated to unprecedented levels and avors tracked with
sugars to produce very ripe grapes without overripe character.
Vineyard Notes
The three clones of Zinfandel at Kuleto Estate are planted between 1200 and 1400 feet in a small bowl containing the only
deep red soil on the property. The head-trained vines face gently to the northeast, avoiding the late afternoon sun and warm winds that can desiccate this late-ripening variety. The deep roots also allow the vines to draw on moisture during the most stressful time in the season. Our unique situation produces fruit that is intensely varietal but without the monstrous tannins often associated with mountaintop Zinfandel.
Winemaker Notes
After the fermentations generated their maximum heat (90+ degrees), the chilling jackets were turned on to slow them down, to capture the maximum amount of fermentation aromas, and to give as much time on the skins without harsh seed extraction.
Tasting Notes
Our estate Zinfandel expresses the more feminine side of the variety, perhaps due to the gentleness of the growing season. The nose smells of candied violets and black cherries. The mouth is very pretty and surprisingly soft.
