Accolades
California Grapevine - 90 Points & Very Highly Recommended

Review 10/1/12: “Medium-light to medium ruby; attractive, herbal, moderately intense, spicy, red cherry fruit aroma with hints of black tea, cola, and stony minerality; medium to medium-full body; supple, herbal, black cherry fruit flavors with a plush mouthfeel and a trace of creamy oak; medium to medium-full tannin; lingering aftertaste. Very highly ...

Wine Enthusiast - 89 Points

Review 9/1/12: “This is the winery’s most expensive Pinot, a barrel selection of its various vineyards. It’s also J Vineyards’ 2010 Pinot, but they struggled with the chilly, moldy vintage. The flavors of raspberry and cherry jam, mocha, cinnamon spice and exotic sandlewood are delicious, but they feel a little heavy.” — ...

Wine Spectator - 91 Points!

Review 9/30/12: “A bit rough-and-tumble in a compelling way, with crushed rock, dried berry, forest floor and floral scents. Gains momentum and expands on the finish. Very promising.” —James Laube, Wine Spectator, September 2012 Read more

Description

The Vineyard The 2010 J Vineyards Barrel 16 Pinot Noir is a wonderful expression of diverse Russian River Valley Pinot Noir microclimates and soils. The sixteen barrels that make up this wine are personally selected by our winemaking team to honor founder Judy Jordan’s Estate Vineyards. A good portion of the wine is from our signature vineyards—Nicole’s and Robert Thomas. Winemaking Grape clusters were hand-harvested at night to ensure fresh fruit character. While still cool, the fruit was hand sorted, gently destemmed and gravity-fed into our open-top fermenters for whole-berry fermentation. Vintage Notes

After primary fermentation, the juice flowed freely into 100% French oak barrels where a slow, gentle malolactic fermentation took place. The long, secondary fermentation on light lees allowed for natural bâtonnage, leading to the development of a velvety, full mid-palate sensation. After aging for 12 months in Burgundian barrels, each lot was evaluated for balance and complexity. Wine from sixteen barrels was blended and returned to barrel for an additional three months.

Winemaker Notes

Grape clusters were hand-harvested at night to ensure fresh fruit character. While still cool, the fruit was hand sorted, gently destemmed and gravity-fed into our open-top fermenters for whole-berry fermentation. Daily tastings determined the precise balance of fruit and tannins before the wine went to barrel. Choosing the lots that make up this
wine is what winemakers like to call “the moment of discovery.” Experimentation and careful blending are what keep the winemaking process fresh and artistic. Barrel 16 is a reflection of that process.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes by Winemaker Melissa Stackhouse
Our 2010 J Vineyards Barrel 16 Pinot Noir is a luxurious wine with distinct complexity and balanced tannins. The wine opens with subtle aromas of black licorice followed by blueberry and currants. Delicate layers of cinnamon, baked mushrooms, and cocoa are underscored by a lush, bright cherry fruit. I suggest pairing this exquisitely layered wine with a cross-rib roast that has been slowly braised in a pinot noir-based broth of beef stock, onions, and carrots. The perfect comfort wine paired with the perfect comfort food.
