In 1992, vintner and restaurateur Pat Kuleto founded Kuleto Estate in a remote mountain setting overlooking Lake Hennessey, Pritchard Hill and the towns of Rutherford and St. Helena. The 761-acre ranch features 90 acres of vineyards
divided into over 100 micro-blocks based upon soil, exposure, elevation and topography. The wines from Kuleto Estate are always deep, intense and luscious.
The growing season in 2010 was the coolest on our estate since its inception in 1999. Lucky for us at Kuleto Estate, we have plenty of sunshine despite the lack of heat. The majority of our vineyard blocks lie above the fog-line, so even if the Napa Valley is socked in, our vines enjoy the first sun of the day. What does a cool vintage mean for a mountain-top vineyard? It means wines that strongly express their varietal character, have tremendous natural acidity for length of mouth-feel and aging, and modest finished alcohols.
In 2010, we continued our experimentation with an older method of producing Chardonnay. By soaking the crushed fruit
on the skins and stems for a few hours before pressing, we’re building texture and grip into the mouth-feel. By fermenting some lots on a small percentage of crushed fruit, we’re maximizing the aroma of the finished wine as well.
The 2010 is feminine in its flavor profile, but has a structure to make you salivate. Since it is still in its infancy, I strongly encourage you to decant it and serve at just 10 degrees below ambient temperature. I left a partial glass uncovered and overnight on my desk and it was still going strong the next morning! This will be a wine that rewards the patient consumer.
